A Municipal Bond Fund is a mutual fund that invests in municipal bonds. Municipal Bonds are a popular investment for those seeking tax-free income. Individuals in a high tax bracket and who live in the issuing state enjoy a potentially higher “taxable equivalent yield” than the yield they might receive from a taxable investment such as a long term Treasury Bond.
To calculate your “taxable equivalent yield” divide the municipal bond (or bond fund) yield by 1 minus your marginal tax rate.
If the municipal bond yield is 3% and your marginal tax rate is .25%, the taxable equivalent yield of this bond is (.03/(1-.25)) = 4%
Investors may choose to invest in a Municipal Bond Fund which may invest in a wider variety of bonds than individuals can afford on their own. Mutual Funds also benefit from institutional pricing schedules rather than paying the high commissions for retail purchases and sales.
California Investment Trust offers two Mutual Funds and one Money Market fund that invest in California Municipal Bonds. Income is non taxable to California residents. The California Investment Trust Municipal Bond funds have a policy to not invest in any bonds that generate income subject to Alternative Minimum Tax.
